Community, school & catchment

Is Glen Abbey the same as its school?

No — three things share the Glen Abbey name and it’s worth keeping them separate. The Glen Abbey community is the MLS® neighbourhood (how listings are grouped), while a same-named school has its own attendance boundary.

A school’s catchment can include homes outside the MLS community — and not every home in Glen Abbey is necessarily assigned to the same school. Because boundaries are drawn by the school board, the only reliable way to know a home’s school is to check the specific address.

About Glen Abbey, Oakville

The community takes its name from the golf course on its eastern edge, and that name records the site's history. A country estate called RayDor was built on the farmland there in 1937; the Jesuits bought the property in 1953 and used it as a religious retreat, and when it sold again in 1963 the new owners named the golf course Glen Abbey in reference to that period. The course was redesigned by Jack Nicklaus in the 1970s, and the Town of Oakville later designated the property for its cultural heritage value.

Residential development followed through the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, giving the community a consistent low-rise character. Detached homes make up most of the housing, alongside townhomes and a smaller number of low-rise condominium buildings, laid out on curving crescents and cul-de-sacs, several backing onto ravine land.

The Glen Abbey Community Centre on Third Line anchors local recreation with a twin-pad arena, a pool, a fitness centre, squash courts and a gymnasium. Neighbourhood parks and walkways connect residential streets to the Fourteen Mile Creek corridor, while the Sixteen Mile Creek valley forms a wooded eastern edge.

Everyday shopping is concentrated in plazas along Upper Middle Road and Third Line, including Abbey Plaza at that intersection. The QEW interchange at Dorval Drive provides highway access, and Bronte GO station on the Lakeshore West line lies a short distance to the south.
